The current population is around 198 million and is predicted, by Euromonitor, to rise to 210 million by 2015. In 2008, its purchasing power parity reached $1.99 trillion. Brazil is a country full of opportunities for those who seek to expand businesses globally.
Although income distribution in Brazil is highly unequal, the emergence of a new lower middle class with increasing disposable incomes offers high potential for retailers. The easier access to credit has also boosted opportunities for not only the consumers in Brazil, but also businesses. It is predicted by Euromonitor that by 2015, 7.5% of the Brazilian households are expected to have annual disposable incomes of over US$15,000.

The United States is Brazil’s biggest import partner, taking up 15.7% of Brazil’s imports. According to the CIA World Fact Book, the best industry segments for U.S. exporters include machinery, electrical and transport equipment, oil, chemical products, automotive parts, and electronics.
Tariff and Regulation Landscape
Based on calculations by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, U.S. exporters looking to export to Brazil face a Common External Tariff (CET) of 14% to 20%, depending on the imported product. However, there are products that are exempted from the CET, such as computers and telecommunications equipment. Such goods are compiled on a list that is available at the Brazilian authorities.
In addition, any shipment to Brazil must include commercial invoices. Such invoices must have a description of the imported goods in Portuguese, and show other information such as date, country of origin, and weight.

Unlike other countries in the past year, Brazil has not been hit as hard with the economic crisis. Although there are still negative impacts to an extent, Brazil has weathered through the difficult times.
